SYDNEY: CEO of electronic discovery and investigation software firm Nuix, Eddie Sheehy, has warned that the so-called “Utegate” controversy that has embroiled political leaders should serve as a wake-up call for all Australian organisations and CIOs.
“It is ironic this happened immediately following National E-Security Week,” he noted. “If you needed an example of how important it is to have control of your organisation’s electronic communications data – even in Australia where related regulations and compliance obligations are not at the stage they’re at in the US or even UK – Utegate is it.”
According to Sheehy, although some government and law enforcement agencies and regulatory bodies are leading the way when it comes to electronic investigation, many are still managing the issue in a reactive, old-fashioned way. Despite this and the Utegate affair, he said the reality is that the technology is readily available to make extensive email investigation of multiple enterprise-level email exchange servers and years of archives a fast, simple and low-cost process.
“The modern, informed CIO or CEO can and should play a critical role in making sure his or her company can sort through terabytes of electronic data to find critical information very quickly when dealing with years’ worth f data, multiple languages, different storage devices, all types of attachments and archived data,” he maintained. “Why wait until your company is in crisis?”
